TVDSB in Turmoil: It's Not Good

Credit where it’s due: Local journalism is alive and well, and The London Free Press reporter Heather Rivers is proving it. Her latest exposé, “Cash-strapped Thames Valley board cuts 42 office jobs,” is a must-read for anyone who cares about transparency, fiscal responsibility, and the future of public education in London and surrounding areas.

Thames Valley District School Board in London,
Thames Valley District School Board in London,

Summary of Key Points:

  • The Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB) is eliminating 42 full-time central office positions, including some in senior administration, to reduce a ballooning deficit.

  • The cuts are part of a cost-saving plan expected to save $4.5 million and reduce the 2024–25 projected deficit from $16.8 million to between $13.7 million and $15.9 million.

  • This move follows a 10-week audit showing a slide from a $3.5M surplus in 2020–21 to a $17.3M deficit in 2023–24.

  • The Ministry of Education has now appointed Paul Boniferro as supervisor over the board, following earlier media reports about questionable spending by senior administrators during a retreat at a luxury hotel in Toronto.

  • Former education director Mark Fisher and associate director Linda Nicholls both left the board in March after paid leaves.

  • Interim director Bill Tucker confirmed the cuts are part of a restructuring aimed at aligning operations with financial realities.

Why This Matters:

This is just the latest in a long list of controversies involving the TVDSB. While classrooms are being asked to “do more with less,” senior administrators were previously racking up travel bills at five-star hotels and traveling in business class. Thanks to Heather Rivers’ tireless reporting, the public is now being made aware of how deeply mismanaged this board has become.

If I'm elected as your Trustee, I will advocate for more transparency and fiscal responsibility, so that the TVDSB will not have to go through another embarrassing

scandal at the cost to taxpayers. I believe at some point, after this election, that

Education Minister Paul Calandra with restore those suspended powers back to the Trustees. What I find it deeply concerning that the TVDSB has to hang a banner on the side of their building, imploring the general public to donate funds. Where did all of the taxpayers money go?
